چکیده

We present a method for visualizing unsteady flow by displaying its vortices. The vortices are identified by using a vorticity-predictor pressure-corrector scheme that follows vortex cores. The cross-sections of a vortex at each point along the core can be represented by a Fourier series. A vortex can be faithfully reconstructed from the series as a simple quadrilateral mesh, or its reconstruction can be enhanced to indicate helical motion. The mesh can reduce the representation of the flow features by a factor of one thousand or more compared with the volumetric dataset. With this amount of reduction it is possible to implement an interactive system on a graphics workstation to permit a viewer to examine, in three dimensions, the evolution of the vortical structures in a complex, unsteady flow. *This research was supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration under NASA contract No. NAS119480 while the author was in residence at the Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering (ICASE), NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA 23681-0001. **Work supported by the Theoretical Flow Physics Branch at NASA Langley Research Center under contract NAS120059.

Extracting Vortices From an Unsteady Flow

A new algorithm for identifying vortices in complex flows is presented. The scheme uses both the vorticity and pressure fields. A skeleton line along the center of a vortex is produced by a two-step predictor-corrector scheme. The technique uses the vector field to move in the direction of the skeleton line and the scalar field to correct the location in the plane perpendicular to the skeleton ...

Numerical Simulation of Unsteady Compressible Flow in Convergent Channel: Pressure Spectral Analysis

This study deals with the numerical solution of a 2D unsteady flow of a compressible viscous fluid in a channel for low inlet airflow velocity. The unsteadiness of the flow is caused by a prescribed periodic motion of a part of the channel wall with large amplitudes, nearly closing the channel during oscillations. The flow is described by the system of Navier-Stokes equations for laminar flows....

Numerical Simulation of Three-Dimensional Unsteady Flow past Ice Crystals

The unsteady flow fields around falling columnar ice crystals, hexagonal ice plates, and broad-branch crystals are simulated by numerically solving the time-dependent Navier–Stokes equations appropriate for these geometries in the primitive equation form. A predictor–corrector method and a quadratic interpolation for convective kinematics (QUICK) scheme are applied on nonuniform grids to determ...

Local Time-stepping for Explicit Discontinuous Galerkin Schemes

A class of explicit discontinuous Galerkin schemes is described which time approximation is based on a predictor corrector formulation. The approximation at the new time level is obtained in one step with use of the information from the direct neighbors only. This allows to introduce a local time-stepping for unsteady simulations with the property that every grid cell runs with its own optimal ...

Voltage Stability Assessment via Continuation Power Flow Method

1 Abstract — This paper presents a potential algorithm for continuation power flow method in voltage stability assessment. Modified continuation power flow method termed as MCBF was developed which solved the solution of bifurcation point at the Q-V curve. The solvability of power flow at the bifurcation point beyond the maximum loadability point of a system was achieved through the implementat...
